Hadrat Sa'id ibn Jubair narrated: I was asked about those who perform li'an (mutual cursing) during the governorship of Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr: 'Are they separated?' I did not know what to say. So I went to the house of Hadrat Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) and asked permission to enter. He said: 'Come in, for nothing has brought you at this hour except a need.' I found him reclining on a saddle-pad, using a pillow stuffed with palm fiber. I said: 'O Abu Abdur Rahman, are the two who perform li'an separated?' He said: 'SubhanAllah! Yes. The first person to ask about that was so-and-so, who submitted: O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us sees his wife committing indecency, what should he do? If he stays silent, he stays silent upon a grave matter, and if he speaks, it is likewise.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) remained silent and did not answer him. Later the man came to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said: 'The matter I asked you about has befallen me.' So Allah the Exalted revealed the verses in Surah al-Nur (24:6-9) regarding li'an. He called the man, recited them to him, reminded him of Allah, and informed him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said: 'I did not lie about her.' Then he called the woman, admonished her and reminded her. She said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, he is lying.' Then the man bore witness four times by Allah that he was truthful, and the fifth time that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was lying. Then the woman bore witness four times by Allah that he was lying, and the fifth time that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was truthful. Then he separated them.
الترجمة الأردية
حضرت سعید بن جبیر سے روایت ہے کہ مجھ سے مصعب بن زبیر کے دورِ حکومت میں لعان کرنے والوں کے بارے میں پوچھا گیا: کیا ان کے درمیان تفریق کی جائے؟ مجھے معلوم نہ تھا کیا کہوں۔ میں حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما کے گھر گیا اور اجازت مانگی۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: آ جاؤ، اس وقت تمہیں کسی ضرورت ہی نے لایا ہوگا۔ میں نے پایا کہ وہ اپنے پالان کی گدی بچھائے ریشے سے بھرا تکیہ لگائے لیٹے ہیں۔ میں نے کہا: اے ابو عبدالرحمن! لعان کرنے والوں میں تفریق کی جائے گی؟ فرمایا: سبحان اللہ! ہاں، سب سے پہلے اس بارے میں فلاں نے پوچھا تھا: یا رسول اللہ! اگر ہم میں سے کوئی اپنی بیوی کو بے حیائی پر دیکھے تو کیا کرے؟ اگر خاموش رہے تو بڑی بات پر خاموش رہا، اور اگر بولے تو بھی ایسا ہی ہے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم خاموش رہے اور جواب نہ دیا۔ بعد میں وہ شخص آیا اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! جس بات کے بارے میں میں نے پوچھا تھا وہ مجھ پر آ پڑی ہے۔ تو اللہ تعالیٰ نے سورۃ النور کی آیات (6-9) نازل فرمائیں۔ آپ نے اس شخص کو بلایا، آیات سنائیں، اللہ کی یاد دلائی اور بتایا کہ دنیا کا عذاب آخرت کے عذاب سے ہلکا ہے۔ اس نے کہا: میں نے اس پر جھوٹ نہیں بولا۔ پھر عورت کو بلایا، نصیحت فرمائی اور یاد دلایا۔ اس نے کہا: اس ذات کی قسم جس نے آپ کو حق کے ساتھ بھیجا، یہ جھوٹا ہے۔ پھر مرد نے چار مرتبہ اللہ کی قسم کھا کر گواہی دی کہ وہ سچا ہے، اور پانچویں بار یہ کہ اس پر اللہ کی لعنت ہو اگر وہ جھوٹا ہو۔ پھر عورت نے چار مرتبہ اللہ کی قسم کھا کر گواہی دی کہ وہ جھوٹا ہے، اور پانچویں بار یہ کہ اس پر اللہ کا غضب ہو اگر وہ سچا ہو۔ پھر آپ نے ان دونوں میں تفریق فرما دی۔
