Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us... from 'Ali ibn al-Madini who said: Malik ibn Anas avoided narrating from Ibn Abi Dhubab, so his name does not appear in his book and he narrated nothing from him. He said: 'Asim ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Ashja'i narrated to us from al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Dhubab, from Sulayman ibn Yasar and Busr ibn Sa'id, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: What is watered by rain - the tithe, and what is watered by water-wheels - half the tithe. 'Asim said: Malik narrated to us that he was informed by Sulayman ibn Yasar and Busr ibn Sa'id, and he left out Ibn Abi Dhubab because of the objectionable matters in his narrations. The Shaykh said: This hadith does not depend on the narration of Ibn Abi Dhubab, for we have narrated it through two authentic chains from Ibn 'Umar from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and through an authentic chain from Jabir from the Prophet (peace be upon him). This is the position of the general scholars, who did not differ on it. The hadith of 'Amr ibn Hazm has been previously mentioned.
