Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us... from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'No owner of gold or silver who does not pay what is due on it...' He then mentioned the hadith about the punishment for withholding the rights on gold, silver, camels, cattle, and sheep. He mentioned regarding camels: 'And part of their right is milking them on the day they come to water.' Then he said: It was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, what about horses?' He said: 'Horses are for three types of people: for one man they are a burden, for another they are a reward, and for another they are a protection. As for the one for whom they are a burden, it is a man who ties them out of ostentation, pride, and hostility against the Muslims - they are a burden for him. As for the one for whom they are a protection, it is a man who ties them in the way of Allah and does not forget Allah's right in their backs and necks - they are a protection for him. As for the one for whom they are a reward, it is a man who ties them in the way of Allah for the Muslims in a pasture or garden; whatever they eat from that pasture or garden is recorded for him as good deeds, and their droppings and urine are recorded as good deeds for him, and if they break their tether and gallop over a hillock or two, Allah records for him the number of their tracks and urine as good deeds, and if their owner passes by a river and they drink from it without him intending to water them, Allah records for him the number of what they drank as good deeds.' It was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, what about donkeys?' He said: 'Nothing has been revealed to me about donkeys except this single comprehensive verse: Whoever does an atom's weight of good shall see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil shall see it.'
