Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi said: 'I witnessed when Umar ibn al-Khattab was stabbed. Abu Lu'lu'ah came to him while he was perhaps straightening the rows and stabbed him, and stabbed twelve men. I saw Umar extending his hand, saying: Catch the dog, for he has killed me! A man came from behind and seized him. Umar was carried to his house and the doctor came and said: Which drink is dearest to you? He said: Nabidh (date drink). So nabidh was brought and he drank from it, and it came out of one of his wounds. The doctor said: That is just blood discharge. Then milk was brought and he drank. The doctor said: Make your will, O Commander of the Faithful, for by Allah I do not think you will last until evening. Ka'b came and said: Did I not tell you that you would die as a martyr, while you were saying: How, when I am on the Arabian Peninsula? A man then said: The prayer, O servants of Allah, the sun is about to rise! They pushed each other until they put forward Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who recited the two shortest surahs in the Quran: al-Asr and al-Kawthar.'
