Abu al-Hasan al-Muqri informed us... from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed one of the two afternoon prayers — Dhuhr or Asr, and I mostly think he said Dhuhr — and gave the salutation after two rak'ahs. He then went to a wooden post at the front of the mosque, looking angry, and placed his hand on it. Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they were too awed to speak to him. The quick ones among the people went out saying: 'Has the prayer been shortened?' Among the people was a man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to call Dhul-Yadayn. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, did you forget or has the prayer been shortened?' He replied: 'I did not forget and the prayer has not been shortened.' He said: 'Rather, you forgot, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Dhul-Yadayn has spoken the truth.' So he prayed two more rak'ahs, then gave the salutation, then said Allahu Akbar and prostrated like his normal prostration or longer, then raised his head and said Allahu Akbar, then placed his head and said Allahu Akbar and prostrated like his normal prostration or longer, then raised his head and said Allahu Akbar.
