Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed one of the evening prayers - either Dhuhr or Asr, and I mostly think he said Dhuhr - and he gave salam after two rak'ahs. He went to a wooden post at the front of the mosque, looking angry - and Hajjaj did not mention 'looking angry' - and placed his hand on it. Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, and they were too awestruck to speak to him. The first people to leave quickly said: 'Has the prayer been shortened?' Among the people was a man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to call Dhul-Yadayn. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, did you forget or has the prayer been shortened?' He said: 'I did not forget and the prayer was not shortened.' He said: 'Rather, you forgot, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Is Dhul-Yadayn correct?' So he prayed two rak'ahs, then said the takbir and prostrated like his [normal] prostration or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir, then placed his head down, said the takbir, and prostrated like his [normal] prostration or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir. The wording is Sulayman's.
