أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أنبأ أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْأَدَمِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زِيَادِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ السِّمْسَارُ ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ ثنا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ مُجَاهِدٍ أَبِي حَرْزَةَ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ قَالَ أَتَيْنَا جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ فِي مَسْجِدِهِ فَقَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا هَذَا وَفِي يَدِهِ عُرْجُونُ ابْنِ طَابٍ فَرَأَى فِي قِبْلَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ نُخَامَةً فَحَكَّهَا بِالْعُرْجُونِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمْ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرِضَ اللهُ عَنْهُ؟ قَالَ فَخَشَعْنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّكُمْ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرِضَ اللهُ عَنْهُ؟ قَالَ فَخَشَعْنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّكُمْ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرِضَ اللهُ عَنْهُ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا لَا أَيُّنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا قَامَ يُصَلِّي فَإِنَّ اللهَ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ فَلَا يَبْصُقَنَّ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ وَلَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَبْصُقْ تَحْتَ رِجْلِهِ الْيُسْرَى فَإِنْ عَجَلَتْ بِهِ بَادِرَةٌ فَلْيَقُلْ هَكَذَا بِثَوْبِهِ ثُمَّ طَوَى ثَوْبَهُ بَعْضَهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ أَرُونِي عَبِيرًا فَقَامَ فَتًى مِنَ الْحِيِّ يَشْتَدُّ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَجَاءَ بِخَلُوقٍ فِي رَاحَتِهِ فَأَخَذَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَعَلَهُ فِي رَأْسِ الْعُرْجُونِ ثُمَّ لَطَخَ بِهِ عَلَى أَثَرِ النُّخَامَةِ قَالَ جَابِرٌ فَمِنْ هُنَاكَ جَعَلْتُمُ الْخَلُوقَ فِي مَسَاجِدِكُمْ

Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Yahya al-Adami informed us in Baghdad, Ahmad ibn Ziyad ibn Mihran al-Simsar informed us, Harun ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, Hatim ibn Isma'il narrated to us from Ya'qub ibn Mujahid Abu Harzah from Ubadah ibn al-Walid ibn Ubadah ibn al-Samit who said: We came to Jabir ibn Abdullah in his mosque. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us in this mosque of ours, and in his hand was a palm stalk from Ibn Tab. He saw mucus on the qiblah of the mosque and scraped it with the stalk. Then he turned to us and said: 'Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?' We were humbled. Then he said: 'Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?' We were humbled. Then he said: 'Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?' We said: None of us, O Messenger of Allah. He said: 'When one of you stands to pray, Allah is in front of his face. So let him not spit toward his face, nor to his right. Let him spit under his left foot. If he is overcome by an urge, let him do like this with his garment' — then he folded his garment. 'Show me some perfume.' A young man from the neighborhood ran to his family and brought some khaluq (saffron perfume) in his palm. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took it, put it on the top of the stalk, and smeared it over the spot where the mucus had been. Jabir said: From this is why you put perfume in your mosques.
