Abu Bakr ibn Furak (may Allah have mercy on him) informed us, from Abdullah ibn Ja'far, from Yunus ibn Habib, from Abu Dawud, from al-Aswad ibn Shayban, from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir, from Mutarrif ibn Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir who said: I used to hear narrations from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) and longed to meet him. When I met him, I said: O Abu Dharr, I used to hear narrations from you and longed to meet you. He said: May Allah bless your father, you have met me, so go ahead. I said: A narration reached me that you narrate that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told you that Allah the Almighty loves three and detests three. He said: I do not think I would lie about my beloved friend (peace be upon him). I said: Who are the three whom Allah loves? He said: A man who meets the enemy and fights — and you will find that in your Book: "Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row" [al-Saff 61:4]. I said: And who? He said: A man who has an evil neighbor who harms him, but he bears his harm patiently until Allah suffices him against it through life or death. He said: And who? He said: A man who was traveling with a group; they stopped and camped, exhausted with drowsiness and sleepiness, and they laid down their heads and slept, but he rose, performed ablution, and prayed out of fear of Allah and hope in Him. I said: Who are the three whom He detests? He said: The miserly boaster, the arrogant vainglorious one — and you will find that in the Book of Allah: "Indeed, Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster" [Luqman 31:18]. He said: And who is the third? He said: The merchant or seller who swears excessively.
