Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, from Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar, from Yunus ibn Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq, regarding the story of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and his fighting at the Battle of Mu'tah. He was saying: How wonderful is Paradise and its nearness! Its drink is sweet and cool. The Romans are Romans whose punishment draws near. It is upon me, when I meet them, to strike them. And from Ibn Ishaq, from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Hazm: Abdullah ibn Rawahah said when he took the banner that day: I swear, O my soul, you shall come down, willingly or by force. If the people charge and tighten the noose, what is wrong that I see you disliking Paradise? You have long been at ease. You are but a drop in a worn water-skin. He also said: O my soul, if you are not killed, you will die. This is the decree of death you have faced. What you wished for has been granted. If you do as they did, you will be rightly guided. If you hold back, you will be wretched. He meant Ja'far and Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them). Then he drew his sword, advanced, and fought until he was killed.
