Waki' told us, he said: Usamah ibn Zayd told us, from Abdullah ibn Yazid, the freedman of al-Aswad ibn Sufyan, from Ibn Thawban, from Abu Hurayrah: that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went out for prayer, and when he said the opening takbir, he turned away and gestured to them as if to say "stay as you are." Then he went out and performed a full ritual bath, then came back with his head dripping, and led them in prayer. When he finished praying, he said: "I was in a state of major ritual impurity, and I forgot to perform ghusl."
