The Prophet (peace be upon him) finished the Fajr prayer one day, then went to the women in the mosque and stopped by them. He said: 'O women, I have not seen anyone with deficiency in mind and religion more capable of swaying the minds of wise men than you. I have seen that you are the majority of the people of the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, so draw near to Allah as much as you can.' Among the women was the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. She went to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and told him what she heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and she took some jewelry of hers. Ibn Mas'ud said: 'Where are you going with this jewelry?' She said: 'I am drawing near to Allah the Almighty and His Messenger with it, hoping that Allah will not make me among the people of the Fire.' He said: 'Woe to you! Give it in charity to me and my children, for we are deserving of it.' She said: 'No, by Allah, not until I go to the Prophet (peace be upon him).' She went to seek permission to see the Prophet (peace be upon him). They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Zaynab is seeking permission.' He said: 'Which of the Zaynabs?' They said: 'The wife of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud.' He said: 'Give her permission.' She entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I heard words from you and returned to Ibn Mas'ud and told him. I took some jewelry to draw near to Allah and to you, hoping that Allah will not make me among the people of the Fire. Ibn Mas'ud told me to give it in charity to him and his children, as they are deserving of it.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Give it in charity to him and his children, for they are deserving of it.' Then she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me about what I heard from you when you stopped by us - that you have never seen anyone with deficiency in mind or religion more capable of swaying the minds of wise men than us. O Messenger of Allah, what is the deficiency of our religion and our minds?' He said: 'As for the deficiency of your religion, it is the menstruation that afflicts you; one of you stays as long as Allah wills without praying or fasting, and that is the deficiency of your religion. As for the deficiency of your minds, your testimony is only half a testimony.'
