Abdur-Razzaq told us, Ma'mar informed us, from Ayyub, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, that Umar ibn al-Khattab saw Utarid selling a garment of brocade. So he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I saw Utarid selling a garment of brocade; if only you would buy it and wear it for delegations, for the Eid, and for Friday. He said: Only one who has no share [in the Hereafter] wears silk - I think he said in the Hereafter. He said: Then garments of striped silk were given as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He gave Ali ibn Abi Talib a garment, gave Usamah ibn Zayd a garment, and sent a garment to Umar ibn al-Khattab, and said to Ali: Cut it into pieces to make headscarves for the women. Umar came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I heard you say what you said about it, then you sent me a garment? He said: I did not send it to you to wear it, but to sell it. As for Usamah, he wore it and went about in it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept looking at him. When Usamah saw him staring intently at him, he said: O Messenger of Allah, you clothed me with it! He said: Cut it into pieces to make headscarves for the women - or words to that effect, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said.
