Marwan b. Mu'awiyah told us, Umar b. Hamzah al-Umari told us, Salim b. Abdullah told us, from Ibn Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever among you is able to be like the owner of the measure of rice, let him be like him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, who was the owner of the measure of rice?" He said: "Three men set out and were caught by rain, so they took shelter in a cave in a mountain. Then a boulder fell from the top of the mountain and sealed the entrance over them. They tried to move it but could not. So they said to one another: 'You have fallen into a great predicament; let each man supplicate by the best deed he has done, that perhaps Allah, the Exalted, may deliver us from this.' So one of them said: 'O Allah, You know that I had two elderly parents, and I used to milk their livestock for them and bring it to them, but I would find them asleep, so I would stand waiting with their milk in my hand, unwilling to give it to anyone before them or to wake them from their sleep, while my children cried around me from hunger. If You know that I only did that out of fear of You, then relieve us of this.' So the boulder moved. Then the second one said: 'O Allah, You know that I had a cousin whom I loved more than anything You created, so I sought her for myself. She said, No, not until you bring a hundred dinars. So I gathered them and gave them to her, until when I sat down with her as a man does with his wife, she said, Fear Allah and do not break the seal except rightfully. So I got up and left her. If You know that I only did that out of fear of You, then relieve us of this.' So the boulder shifted until the sky became visible. Then the third one said: 'O Allah, You know that I hired a laborer for a measure of rice. When evening came I offered him his due, but he refused to take it and left, abandoning it with me. So I felt bound to preserve it, and I invested it and improved it for him until I bought cattle and a shepherd for it from its proceeds. Then he came to me after a time and said, Fear Allah and give me my wage, and do not wrong me. I said, Go to that cattle and its shepherd and take them. He said, Fear Allah, and do not mock me. I said, I am not mocking you. So he went and drove them away. If You know that I only did that seeking Your pleasure, out of fear of You, then relieve us of this.' So the boulder rolled away completely, and they came out walking." Ya'qub told us, my father told me, from Salih, Nafi' told us that Abdullah b. Umar said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "While three men were walking together, rain caught them, so they took shelter in a cave in a mountain. While they were in it, a boulder fell from the mountain and sealed it over them," and he mentioned the hadith in similar meaning.
