Ibrahim ibn Habib ibn ash-Shahid told us, my father told us, from Anas ibn Sirin, who said: I said to Abdullah ibn Umar, "Should I recite behind the imam?" He said, "The imam's recitation suffices for you." I said, "The two rak'ahs of dawn - I lengthen the recitation in them." He said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray the night prayer two by two." I said, "I only asked you about the two rak'ahs of dawn." He said, "You are indeed tiresome! Do you not see that I am beginning the hadith? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray the night prayer two by two, and when he feared the approach of dawn, he would pray witr with one rak'ah, then lay down his head - if you wish you may say he slept, and if you wish you may say he did not sleep - then he would rise for the two rak'ahs of dawn with the call to prayer in his ears. So how could there be any lengthy recitation?" Then I said, "A man bequeaths wealth in the path of Allah - is it to be spent on Hajj from it?" He said, "Indeed, if you were to do that, it would be in the path of Allah." I said, "A man misses a rak'ah with the imam, and the imam gives the closing salutation - should he rise to make it up before the imam rises?" He said, "The imam, when he gave the salutation, would rise." I said, "A man takes on debt more than his wealth can cover." He said, "For every treacherous person there is a banner on the Day of Resurrection at his backside according to the extent of his treachery."
