Ishaq ibn Sulayman and Abdullah ibn al-Harith narrated to us, they said: Hanzalah narrated to us: I heard Salim say: I heard Abdullah ibn Umar say: Umar ibn al-Khattab brought to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a garment of brocade and said: O Messenger of Allah, why not buy this garment and wear it when delegations of people come to you? He said: This is only worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was brought three garments, and he sent one to Umar, one to Ali, and one to Usamah ibn Zayd. Umar then came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with his garment and said: O Messenger of Allah, you sent this to me, yet I heard you say what you said about it. He said: I only sent it to you so that you might sell it, or tear it up for your womenfolk as head-coverings. Ishaq said in his narration: Usamah then came to him wearing the garment, and he said: I did not send it to you to wear it; I only sent it to you to sell it. I do not know whether he told Usamah to tear it up as head-coverings or not. Abdullah ibn al-Harith said in his narration that he heard Salim ibn Abdullah say: I heard Abdullah ibn Umar say: Umar found (this troubling) — and he mentioned its meaning. Abdullah ibn al-Harith narrated to us: Hanzalah narrated to me, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who said: Usamah came to him having worn it, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at him and said: Did you clothe me with this? He said: Tear it up among your women as head-coverings, or fulfil your need with it.
