Abdullah said: I read to my father from here, and he affirmed it and said: Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i told me: Sa'id ibn Salim — meaning al-Qaddah — informed us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, that Isma'il ibn Umayya informed him, from Abdul Malik ibn Umayr, that he said: I was present with Abu Ubayda ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud when two men came to him disputing over a sale of goods; one said, "I bought it for such-and-such," and the other said, "I sold it for such-and-such." Abu Ubayda said, "A case like this was brought to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, and he said, 'I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a case like this was brought to him, and he ordered that the seller be made to swear an oath, then the buyer be given the choice: if he wishes, he takes it; if he wishes, he leaves it.'" Abdullah said: I read to my father, he said: I was informed, concerning Hisham ibn Yusuf, in the matter of the two parties to a sale, in the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, from Isma'il ibn Umayya, from Abdul Malik ibn Ubayd — and my father said, Hajjaj al-A'war said, "Abdul Malik ibn Ubayda" — he said: and Hushaym told us: Ibn Abi Layla informed us, from al-Qasim ibn Abdul Rahman, from Ibn Mas'ud, without mentioning "from his father."
