Ya'qub told us: my father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abu Umays, Utba ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, told me, from Abu Fazarah, from Abu Zayd, the freed slave of Amr ibn Hurayth al-Makhzumi, from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Mecca, among a small group of his companions, he said, "Let a man among you stand with me, and let no man stand with me who has in his heart even the weight of a speck of dust of deceit." He said: So I stood with him, and I took a water-skin, thinking it held nothing but water, and I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until, when we were in the upper part of Mecca, I saw dark shapes gathered together. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and said, "Stand here until I come to you." He said: So I stood, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on to them, and I saw them surging up towards him. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed up with them a long night, until he came to me at dawn and said to me, "Have you remained standing, O Ibn Mas'ud?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not tell me to stand until you came to me?" Then he said to me, "Do you have any water for ablution?" I said, "Yes," and I opened the water-skin, and it turned out to be date-wine (nabidh). I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I took the water-skin thinking it was nothing but water, and it turned out to be nabidh." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "A good date and pure water." Then he performed ablution with it. When he stood to pray, two figures among them came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we would like you to lead us in our prayer." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lined them up behind him, then led us in prayer. When he finished, I said to him, "Who were these, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "These were the jinn of Nasibin who came to dispute with me about matters between them, and they asked me for provisions, so I provided for them." I said to him, "Do you have anything, O Messenger of Allah, to provide them with?" He said, "I have provided them with the return, and every piece of dung they find, they will find it to be barley, and every bone they find, they will find it covered with flesh." He said: And at that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cleansing oneself with dung or bone.
