Abu Mu’awiyah told us: al-A’mash told us, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, told us — and he is the truthful, the believed — "Indeed each one of you has his creation gathered together in his mother’s womb for forty days, then he is a clot of blood for a like period, then he is a lump of flesh for a like period, then the angel is sent to him and breathes the soul into him, and he is commanded with four matters: his provision, his lifespan, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or blessed. By the One besides Whom there is no god, indeed one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is nothing between him and it but an arm’s length, then what has been written overtakes him, and he is sealed with the deeds of the people of the Fire, and so he enters it; and indeed a man may do the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is nothing between him and it but an arm’s length, then what has been written overtakes him, and he is sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise, and so he enters it."
