Rawh told us: Hammad told us, from Ali ibn Zayd, from Yusuf ibn Mihran, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "When the verse of debt was revealed" - he said - the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The first to deny was Adam, peace be upon him" - he said this three times - "When Allah created Adam, peace be upon him, He wiped his back and brought forth from it all who would be created until the Day of Resurrection, and He began to present them to him. He saw among them a man who shone, and he said: 'O Lord, which of my sons is this?' He said: 'This is your son Dawud (David).' He said: 'O Lord, how long is his lifespan?' He said: 'Sixty years.' He said: 'O Lord, increase his lifespan.' He said: 'No, unless you add to it from your own lifespan.' Now Adam's lifespan was a thousand years, so he gave him forty years from his own lifespan. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, wrote a document about it and made the angels witness it. When Adam, peace be upon him, was about to die, the angels came to take his soul, and he said: 'My time has not yet come; forty years remain of my lifespan.' They said: 'You gave those years as a gift to your son Dawud.' He said: 'I did not do that, nor did I give him anything.' So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, brought out the document against him, and the angels held it up against him."
