Abu Usamah told us: Hisham b. Urwah told us: My father informed me, from Asma' bint Abi Bakr, who said: al-Zubayr married me when he had no property on earth, nor slave, nor anything except his horse. She said: I used to feed his horse, take care of all its needs, and groom it, and grind date-stones for his watering-camel, and I would draw water, sew his leather bucket, and knead dough — though I did not know how to bake well, so neighboring women of the Ansar, who were truthful women, would bake for me. And I used to carry date-stones on my head from the land of al-Zubayr which the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) had granted him, which was two-thirds of a farsakh from me. She said: One day I came with the date-stones on my head, and I met the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), with a group of his Companions with him. He called me, then said, 'Ikh, ikh' (to make his camel kneel) so as to carry me behind him. She said: I felt shy to travel with the men, and remembered al-Zubayr and his jealousy — she said he was the most jealous of people. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) realized that I felt shy, so he went on. I came to al-Zubayr and said, 'The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) met me while I had date-stones on my head, with a group of his Companions with him, and he made his camel kneel so I could ride with him, but I felt shy and remembered your jealousy.' He said, 'By God, your carrying the date-stones is more distressing to me than your riding with him.' She said: Until Abu Bakr later sent me a servant, who spared me the care of the horse, and it was as though he had freed me.
