Affan told us: Hammad b. Salamah told us: Thabit told us: Ibn Umar b. Abi Salamah told me at Mina, from his father, that Umm Salamah said: Abu Salamah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When one of you is struck by a calamity, let him say: 'Truly we belong to Allah, and truly to Him we shall return. With You I reckon my calamity, so reward me for it and give me something better in exchange for it.'" When Abu Salamah was dying, he said: "O Allah, grant my family a good successor in my place." When he passed away, I said: "Truly we belong to Allah, and truly to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I reckon my calamity, so reward me for it." She said: "I wanted to say, 'and give me something better in exchange for it,' but I said, 'Who is better than Abu Salamah?' Yet I kept on until I said it." When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr proposed to her but she refused him; then Umar proposed to her but she refused him. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent to her, and she said: "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah and his messenger. Tell the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that I am a jealous woman, that I have young children, and that none of my guardians is present." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent back to her: "As for your saying that you have young children, Allah will surely provide for your children; as for your saying that you are jealous, I will pray to Allah to remove your jealousy; and as for the guardians, none of them, present or absent, will do anything but approve of me." I said: "O Umar, get up and marry the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to me." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I will not give you less than what I gave your sister so-and-so: two grinding stones, two water jars, and a cushion of leather stuffed with palm fiber." She said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to come to her, and whenever he came, she would take Zaynab and place her in her lap to nurse her, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was shy and noble, so he would feel embarrassed and go back. He did that several times. Ammar b. Yasir noticed what she was doing, so one day he came - he was her maternal brother - and entered upon her and snatched the child from her lap, saying: "Leave this ugly, detestable thing that has caused you to trouble the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and entered, and began looking around the house, saying: "Where is Zanab? What has become of Zanab?" She said: "Ammar came and took her away." So he consummated the marriage with his wife, then he said: "If you wish, I will give you seven days, and if I give you seven, I will give seven to the other wives." Affan told us: Ja'far b. Sulayman told us, from Thabit, who said: Umar b. Abi Salamah told me - and Sulayman b. al-Mughirah said: "Ibn Umar b. Abi Salamah" as a report without a direct link to the Companion.
