Dhakwan, the doorkeeper of Aishah, narrated that Abdullah ibn Abbas came seeking permission to visit Aishah. Her nephew Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman was by her head. I said: 'This is Ibn Abbas seeking permission.' Her nephew leaned over her and said: 'This is Abdullah ibn Abbas seeking permission to visit, and she is dying.' She said: 'Leave me from Ibn Abbas.' He said: 'O mother, Ibn Abbas is among the righteous of your sons; he wants to greet you and bid you farewell.' She said: 'Let him in if you wish.' So I let him in. When he sat down, he said: 'Receive glad tidings!' She said: 'And more?' He said: 'Between you and meeting Muhammad (peace be upon him) and your beloved ones is only that the soul departs from the body. You were the most beloved of the Messenger of Allah's wives to him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not love except what is good. Your necklace fell on the night of al-Abwa', and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stayed until morning at that place, and the people had no water with them. Then Allah the Almighty revealed: "So perform tayammum with clean earth" (4:43). That was because of you, and what Allah revealed for this ummah of ease. And Allah revealed your innocence from above seven heavens, brought by the Trustworthy Spirit (Jibril). There is no mosque of Allah's mosques where He is remembered except that it is recited therein during the hours of night and day.' She said: 'Leave me, O Ibn Abbas. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I wish I had been something forgotten and long gone.'
