Affan told us, saying Hammad bin Salamah told us, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from Aisha, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said during his illness: Command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Aisha said to Hafsah: Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man; if he stands in your place, he will not be able to make himself heard to the people because of weeping. He said: Command him to lead the people in prayer. She repeated this several times, and each time he said: Command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. He said, the third time: Leave me be, for you are indeed like the women companions of Joseph -- let Abu Bakr lead the people.
