Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad - meaning Ibn Ishaq - said: Husayn ibn Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Abbas narrated to me from Ikrima, who said: Abu Rafi', freedman of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I was a young servant of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and Islam had already entered among us. I embraced Islam, and Umm al-Fadl embraced Islam, and al-Abbas had also embraced Islam, but he feared his people and concealed his Islam. Abu Lahab, the enemy of Allah, had stayed behind from [the battle of] Badr and sent in his place al-As ibn Hisham ibn al-Mughira - and that is what they all did: no man stayed behind except that he sent someone in his place. When the good news came to us, Allah humbled him and disgraced him, and we found within ourselves strength." And he mentioned the hadith. And from this same passage, in the book of Ya'qub, it is unconnected [mursal], with no chain of narration in it, and it says therein, "the brother of Banu Salim ibn Awf." He said: And among the captives was Abu Wada'a ibn Subayra al-Sahmi. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He has a clever, wealthy merchant son in Mecca - it is as if you can already see him coming to me regarding the ransom of his father." And Quraysh had said, "Do not hasten to ransom your captives, lest Muhammad and his companions be emboldened against you." Al-Muttalib ibn Abi Wada'a said, "You have spoken truly, so let us do [as you say]." But he slipped away at night and arrived in Medina, and took his father for four thousand dirhams, and departed with him. And Mikraz ibn Hafs ibn al-Akhyaf came for the ransom of Suhayl ibn Amr - and the one who had captured him was Malik ibn al-Dukhshun, brother of Banu Malik ibn Awf.
