حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ مُظَفَّرُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ عَامِرِ بْنِ وَاثِلَةَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مَرَّ عَلَى قَوْمٍ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَرَدُّوا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُمْ قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْغِضُ هَذَا فِي اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَهْلُ الْمَجْلِسِ بِئْسَ وَاللَّهِ مَا قُلْتَ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَنُنَبِّئَنَّهُ قُمْ يَا فُلَانُ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ فَأَخْبِرْهُ قَالَ فَأَدْرَكَهُ رَسُولُهُمْ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِمَا قَالَ فَانْصَرَفَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَرَرْتُ بِمَجْلِسٍ مِنْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِيهِمْ فُلَانٌ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَرَدُّوا السَّلَامَ فَلَمَّا جَاوَزْتُهُمْ أَدْرَكَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ فُلَانًا قَالَ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْغِضُ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ فِي اللَّهِ فَادْعُهُ فَسَلْهُ عَلَى مَا يُبْغِضُنِي فَدَعَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ فَسَأَلَهُ عَمَّا أَخْبَرَهُ الرَّجُلُ فَاعْتَرَفَ بِذَلِكَ وَقَالَ قَدْ قُلْتُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلِمَ تُبْغِضُهُ قَالَ أَنَا جَارُهُ وَأَنَا بِهِ خَابِرٌ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً قَطُّ إِلَّا هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ الْمَكْتُوبَةَ الَّتِي يُصَلِّيهَا الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ قَالَ الرَّجُلُ سَلْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ رَآنِي قَطُّ أَخَّرْتُهَا عَنْ وَقْتِهَا أَوْ أَسَأْتُ الْوُضُوءَ لَهَا أَوْ أَسَأْتُ الرُّكُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ فِيهَا فَسَأَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يَصُومُ قَطُّ إِلَّا هَذَا الشَّهْرَ الَّذِي يَصُومُهُ الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ رَآنِي قَطُّ أَفْطَرْتُ فِيهِ أَوْ انْتَقَصْتُ مِنْ حَقِّهِ شَيْئًا فَسَأَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يُعْطِي سَائِلًا قَطُّ وَلَا رَأَيْتُهُ يُنْفِقُ مِنْ مَالِهِ شَيْئًا فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِخَيْرٍ إِلَّا هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ الَّتِي يُؤَدِّيهَا الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ قَالَ فَسَلْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ كَتَمْتُ مِنْ الزَّكَاةِ شَيْئًا قَطُّ أَوْ مَاكَسْتُ فِيهَا طَالِبَهَا قَالَ فَسَأَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُمْ إِنْ أَدْرِي لَعَلَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ عَلَى قَوْمٍ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَبَا الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ مِنْ حِفْظِهِ وَقَالَ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ حَدَّثَ بِهِ ابْنُهُ يَعْقُوبُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ فَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَبَا الطُّفَيْلِ فَأَحْسِبُهُ وَهِمَ وَالصَّحِيحُ رِوَايَةُ يَعْقُوبَ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ.

Abu Kamil Muzaffar ibn Mudrik narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, Ibn Shihab narrated to us from Abu al-Tufayl 'Amir ibn Wathila, that a man passed by some people and greeted them with salam, and they returned his greeting. When he had passed them, a man among them said, "By God, I hate this man for the sake of God." The people of the gathering said, "By God, what you have said is evil! By God, we will surely inform him. Get up, so-and-so" -- to a man among them -- "and inform him." He said: So their messenger caught up with him and told him what had been said. The man turned back until he came to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Messenger of God, I passed by a gathering of Muslims among whom was so-and-so, and I greeted them with salam, and they returned the greeting. When I had passed them, a man from among them caught up with me and informed me that so-and-so said, 'By God, I hate this man for the sake of God.' So call him and ask him why he hates me." So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, called him and asked him about what the man had reported, and he admitted it and said, "I did say that about him, O Messenger of God." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Then why do you hate him?" He said, "I am his neighbor and am well acquainted with him. By God, I have never seen him pray any prayer except this obligatory prayer which the pious and the wicked alike pray." The man said, "Ask him, O Messenger of God, has he ever seen me delay it past its time, or perform the ablution for it improperly, or perform the bowing and prostration in it improperly?" The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him about that, and he said, "No." Then he said, "By God, I have never seen him fast except this month which the pious and the wicked alike fast." He said, "O Messenger of God, has he ever seen me break my fast in it, or fall short of its due in any way?" The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him about that, and he said, "No." Then he said, "By God, I have never seen him give anything to a beggar, nor have I seen him spend anything of his wealth in any way in the path of God for good, except this charity (zakat) which the pious and the wicked alike pay." He said, "Ask him, O Messenger of God, have I ever withheld any of the zakat, or haggled with its collector over it?" The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him about that, and he said, "No." So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "Get up; I do not know -- perhaps he is better than you." Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us from Ibn Shihab, that he informed him that a man in the lifetime of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by some people, and he did not mention Abu al-Tufayl. 'Abdullah said: It has reached me that Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated this hadith from his memory and said "from Abu al-Tufayl," while his son Ya'qub narrated it from his father and did not mention Abu al-Tufayl. I think he (Ibrahim) was mistaken, and the correct version is the narration of Ya'qub, and God knows best.
