حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَحْمُودُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ عِتْبَانَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدْ أَنْكَرْتُ بَصَرِي وَالسُّيُولُ تَحُولُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَسْجِدِي فَلَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ جِئْتَ فَصَلَّيْتَ فِي بَيْتِي مَكَانًا أَتَّخِذُهُ مَسْجِدًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَفْعَلُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ قَالَ فَمَرَّ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَتْبَعَهُ فَانْطَلَقَ مَعَهُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ أَيْنَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ فَأَشَرْتُ لَهُ حَيْثُ أُرِيدُ قَالَ ثُمَّ حَبَسْتُهُ عَلَى خَزِيرٍ صَنَعْنَاهُ لَهُ قَالَ فَسَمِعَ أَهْلُ الْوَادِي يَعْنِي أَهْلَ الدَّارِ فَثَابُوا إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى امْتَلَأَ الْبَيْتُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَيْنَ مَالِكُ بْنُ الدُّخْشُنِ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ مَالِكُ بْنُ الدُّخَيْشِنِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ ذَاكَ رَجُلٌ مُنَافِقٌ لَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَلَا رَسُولَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَقُولُ هُوَ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَّا نَحْنُ فَنَرَى وَجْهَهُ وَحَدِيثَهُ إِلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَيْضًا لَا تَقُولُ هُوَ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ قَالَ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَلَنْ يُوَافِيَ عَبْدٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا حُرِّمَ عَلَى النَّارِ قَالَ مَحْمُودٌ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ نَفَرًا فِيهِمْ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ مَا أَظُنُّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ فَآلَيْتُ إِنْ رَجَعْتُ إِلَى عِتْبَانَ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَوَجَدْتُهُ شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا قَدْ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ وَهُوَ إِمَامُ قَوْمِهِ فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ فَحَدَّثَنِيهِ كَمَا حَدَّثَنِيهِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ فَكَانَ الزُّهْرِيُّ إِذَا حَدَّثَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ قَالَ ثُمَّ نَزَلَتْ فَرَائِضُ وَأُمُورٌ نَرَى أَنَّ الْأَمْرَ انْتَهَى إِلَيْهَا فَمَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ لَا يَفْتُرَ فَلَا يَفْتُرْ.

Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Mahmud ibn al-Rabi' narrated to me, from Itban ibn Malik, who said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: My eyesight has become weak, and the floodwaters cut me off from my mosque, so I would love for you to come and pray in a spot in my house that I could take as a place of prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I will do so, if Allah wills. He said: Then he passed by Abu Bakr and asked him to accompany him, so he went along with him. He asked permission and entered upon me, and while standing he said: Where do you want me to pray? So I pointed out to him the place I wanted. He said: Then I detained him for some khazir (a dish of meat and flour) that we had prepared for him. He said: The people of the valley -- meaning the people of the household -- heard, and they gathered until the house was full. Then a man said: Where is Malik ibn al-Dukhshun -- or he may have said Malik ibn al-Dukhayshin? A man said: That is a hypocrite who does not love Allah or His Messenger. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not say that; he says 'There is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the face of Allah. He said: O Messenger of Allah, but we see his face and his talk directed to the hypocrites. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said again: Do not say that; he says 'There is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the face of Allah. He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: No servant will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection saying 'There is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the face of Allah, except that he will be forbidden to the Fire. Mahmud said: I narrated this hadith to a group of people, among them Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, who said: I do not think the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said what you said. He said: So I vowed that if I returned to Itban I would ask him. So I went back to him and found him an old man, advanced in age, who had lost his eyesight, and he was the imam of his people. I sat beside him and asked him about this hadith, and he narrated it to me just as he had narrated it to me the first time. Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri, whenever he narrated this hadith, would say: Then obligations and matters were revealed which we consider to have settled the matter, so whoever is able not to slacken, let him not slacken.
