حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْبَتِّيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ جَدَّهُ أَسْلَمَ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَمْ تُسْلِمْ جَدَّتُهُ وَلَهُ مِنْهَا ابْنٌ فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنْ شِئْتُمَا خَيَّرْتُمَا الْغُلَامَ قَالَ وَأَجْلَسَ الْأَبَ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ وَالْأُمَّ نَاحِيَةً فَخَيَّرَهُ فَانْطَلَقَ نَحْوَ أُمِّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِهِ قَالَ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أَبِيهِ.

Hushaym told us: Uthman Abu Amr al-Batti told us, from Abd al-Hamid ibn Salamah, that his grandfather accepted Islam in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but his grandmother did not accept Islam, and he had a son by her. They disputed before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "If you wish, I will give the boy the choice." He said: He seated the father in one place and the mother in another place, and gave him the choice. He went toward his mother, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, guide him," and he then returned to his father.
