Abu al-Nadr told us, Shayban told us, from Ash'ath, from al-Aswad ibn Hilal, from a man of his people, who used to say during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, "Uthman ibn Affan will not die until he is made caliph." We said, "How do you know that?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, 'I saw last night in a dream as though three of my companions were being weighed. Abu Bakr was weighed and he outweighed; then Umar was weighed and he outweighed; then Uthman was weighed and he came up short, though he is righteous.'"
