Muhammad ibn Ja'far and Rawh told us, the meaning being the same, both saying: Awf told us, from Maymun Abu Abdullah - Rawh said: al-Kurdi - from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father Buraydah al-Aslami, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, encamped at the fortress of the people of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave the banner to Umar ibn al-Khattab, and those of the Muslims who rose up went forth with him; they met the people of Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Tomorrow I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love. The next day he called Ali, who had an eye ailment, spat in his eyes, and gave him the banner, and the people rose up with him and met the people of Khaybar. Marhab was there, chanting verses before them, saying: Khaybar has surely known that I am Marhab, fully armed, a tested champion; I thrust at times and at times I strike, when the lions advance blazing. He and Ali exchanged two blows; Ali struck him on the crown of his head so that the sword bit into it as far as his teeth, and the people of the army heard the sound of his blow. The rest of the people had not yet caught up with Ali when victory was granted through him and them.
