Hujayn ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Abd al-Aziz — that is, Ibn Abi Salamah — narrated to us, from Abu Hazim al-Qass, from Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi, a companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: A messenger came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "Banu Amr ibn Awf have fought each other and thrown stones at one another." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to them to make peace between them, and the time for prayer came. So Bilal came to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: "Will you pray, so that I may call the prayer?" He said, "Yes." So Bilal called the prayer, and Abu Bakr stepped forward. When he had entered into the prayer and the people had lined up behind him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came from where he had gone, and began making his way through the rows until he reached the first row, then he stopped, and the people began to clap to alert Abu Bakr to the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Abu Bakr would not turn around during prayer, but when they persisted, he turned around, and there was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, behind him among the people. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured to him to remain in place, so he raised his hands as if supplicating, then withdrew backward until he reached the row. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he had finished his prayer, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What is the matter with you — did something occur to you during your prayer, that you began to clap? If something occurs to one of you during his prayer, let him glorify Allah, for glorification is for the men and clapping is for the women." Then he said to Abu Bakr: "Why did you raise your hands? What prevented you from remaining when I gestured to you?" He said: "I raised my hands because I was praising Allah for what I saw from you, and it was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in prayer."
