حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي مَكْحُولٌ عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ رَبِيعٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ قَالَ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصُّبْحَ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ إِذَا جَهَرَ قَالَ قُلْنَا أَجَلْ وَاللَّهِ إِذًا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لَهَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا.

Ya'qub told us, my father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, Makhul told me, from Mahmud ibn Rabi' al-Ansari, from 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in the dawn prayer, and the recitation became heavy upon him in it. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished his prayer, he turned his face toward us and said: "I see that you recite behind your imam when he recites aloud." He said: We said: "Yes indeed, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we do that." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: "Do not do so, except with the Mother of the Qur'an, for there is no prayer for one who does not recite it."
