My father told me, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan told us, from Yahya — that is, ibn Sa'id al-Ansari — who said: Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban told me, from Ibn Muhayriz, from a man of Banu Kinanah who was called al-Mukhdaji, who said: There was a man in Syria called Abu Muhammad who said that the witr prayer is obligatory. He said: So I went to Ubadah and said: "Abu Muhammad claims that the witr is obligatory." He said: "Abu Muhammad has lied. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'Five prayers which Allah, Exalted is He, has prescribed upon His servants. Whoever performs them and does not neglect any of them will come, on the Day of Resurrection, having a covenant with Allah that He will admit him to Paradise; and whoever neglects them out of contempt will come having no covenant — if He wills, He punishes him, and if He wills, He admits him to Paradise.'"
