Hushaym narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by two graves and said: "Indeed, they are being punished, and they are not being punished for something major." Then he said: "Indeed (it is major). As for one of them, he did not clean himself from urine, and as for the other, he used to go around spreading gossip." Then he took a fresh palm branch, split it in two, and placed one on each grave. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you do that?' He said: "Perhaps their punishment will be lightened as long as these do not dry out."
