Mu'awiyah ibn Amr and Harun ibn Ma'ruf told us, they said: Abdullah ibn Wahb told us — Harun said in his hadith: and Haywah said, from Ibn Abi Habib, while Mu'awiyah said, from Haywah, from Yazid, from Salamah ibn Usamah, from Yahya ibn al-Hakam — that Mu'adh said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me to collect alms from the people of Yemen, and he commanded me to take from the cattle, from every thirty, one tabi' — Harun said: the tabi' is a one-year-old male or female calf — and from every forty, one musinnah (a two-year-old). He said: They proposed to me that I take from forty — Harun said: what is between forty or fifty, and between sixty and seventy, and what is between eighty and ninety — so I refused that and said to them, "Not until I ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about that." So I came and informed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he commanded me to take from every thirty a tabi', from every forty a musinnah, from sixty two tabi's, from seventy a musinnah and a tabi', from eighty two musinnahs, from ninety three tabi's, from one hundred a musinnah and two tabi's, from one hundred and ten two musinnahs and a tabi', and from one hundred and twenty three musinnahs or four tabi's. He said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded me not to take anything in between that — Harun said: "in between that" anything — unless it reaches a musinnah or a jadha'. And he held that there is no obligatory due on the amounts falling between the fixed thresholds.
