Rib'i b. Ibrahim told us, 'Abd al-Rahman — that is, Ibn Ishaq — told us: my father told me, from his uncle and from Muhammad b. Zayd b. al-Muhajir, that they both heard 'Umayr, the mawla of Abi al-Lahm, say: I came with my masters intending to emigrate, until when we drew near Medina — he said — they entered Medina and left me behind with their baggage-train. He said: Severe hunger struck me. Some of those leaving Medina passed by me and said to me: "If only you entered Medina and got some of the fruit of its orchards." So I entered an orchard and cut off two clusters from it. The owner of the orchard came upon me and brought me to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him my story — and I had two garments on me. He said to me: "Which of these two is better?" I pointed to one of them, and he said: "Take it, and give the owner of the orchard the other one," and he let me go free.
