Zakariyya ibn Adiyy narrated to us: Ubaydullah ibn Amr informed us, from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil, from At-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Ka'b, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to stand close to a palm-trunk when the mosque was [merely] a roofed shelter, and he would deliver the sermon beside that trunk. A man among his Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, would you like something made for you to stand upon on Friday, so that the people may see you and you may make your sermon heard by them?" He said: "Yes." So three steps were made for him, which are those on the pulpit (minbar). When the pulpit was made and placed in the spot where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, put it, and when he wished to go to the pulpit, he passed by the trunk, and when he had passed beyond it, the trunk moaned until it cracked and split. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went back and wiped it with his hand until it grew still, then he returned to the pulpit. Whenever he prayed, he would pray facing it. When the mosque was demolished and altered, Ubayy ibn Ka'b took that trunk, and it remained with him until it decayed, the termites ate it, and it turned to dust.
