Yahya ibn Sa'id told us, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, Abdullah ibn Isa told me, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: I was in the mosque when a man entered and recited a recitation that I disapproved of. Then another entered and recited a recitation other than that of his companion. So we both got up together and went in to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, this one recited a recitation that I disapproved of, then this one entered and recited a recitation different from that of his companion." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them both: "Recite." So they both recited, and he said: "You have both done correctly." When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said what he said, it weighed heavily upon me, something I had not felt even in the Age of Ignorance. When he saw what had overcome me, he struck my chest, and I broke out in sweat, and it was as if I were looking at Allah, Blessed and Exalted, in awe. He said: "O Ubayy, my Lord, Blessed and Exalted, sent to me that I should recite the Qur'an upon one letter. I replied to Him: 'Make it easy for my nation.' So He sent to me that I should recite it upon two letters. I replied to Him: 'Make it easy for my nation.' So He sent to me that I should recite it upon seven letters, and for every reply of yours you shall have a request that you may ask of Me." He said: I said: "O Allah, forgive my nation. O Allah, forgive my nation." And I deferred the third request for a day when all creation will turn to me in need of it, even Ibrahim, peace be upon him.
