He said: 'Affan told us, Hammad told us, Humayd informed us, from Anas, from 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit, that Ubayy ibn Ka'b said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me a verse and taught it to another differently from Ubayy's recitation. I said: "Who taught it to you?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught it to me." I said: "By Allah, he taught it to me thus and thus." Ubayy said: I had never felt such doubt about Islam creep into me as I felt that day. So I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, did you not teach me such-and-such verse?" He said: "Yes." I said: "This man claims that you taught it to him thus and thus." He struck his hand upon my chest, and that doubt left me, and I never felt anything of it again. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Gabriel and Michael, peace be upon them both, came to me. Gabriel said: 'Recite the Qur'an in one mode.' Michael said: 'Ask him for more.' He said: 'Recite it in two modes.' He said: 'Ask him for more,' until it reached seven modes." He said: "Each of them is sufficient and satisfying." 'Abdullah told us, my father told me, Yahya ibn Sa'id told me, from Humayd, from Anas, that Ubayy said: "Nothing has troubled my chest since I embraced Islam except that I recited a verse..." and he mentioned the hadith, but did not mention 'Ubadah in it.
