Isma'il narrated to us: Ayyub informed us, from Muhammad b. Sirin, from Abu Bakra, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered a sermon during his Pilgrimage and said: "Indeed, time has completed its cycle as it was on the day God created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred, three of them consecutive: Dhu al-Qa'da, Dhu al-Hijja, and al-Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar, which lies between Jumada and Sha'ban." Then he said: "What day is this?" We said: "God and His Messenger know best." He fell silent until we thought he would call it by other than its name. He said: "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?" We said: "Yes indeed." Then he said: "What month is this?" We said: "God and His Messenger know best." He fell silent until we thought he would call it by other than its name. He said: "Is it not Dhu al-Hijja?" We said: "Yes indeed." Then he said: "What land is this?" We said: "God and His Messenger know best." He fell silent until we thought he would call it by other than its name. He said: "Is this not the Sacred Land?" We said: "Yes indeed." He said: "Then indeed your blood, your wealth" — he said, and I think he said — "and your honor are as sacred to you as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. And you shall meet your Lord, and He will question you about your deeds. Beware, do not revert after me to being misguided, striking one another's necks. Have I conveyed the message? Let the one present convey it to the one absent, for perhaps he to whom it is conveyed will be more mindful of it than some who heard it directly." Muhammad said: "And that indeed came to pass." He said: "Indeed, some of those to whom it was conveyed were more mindful of it than some of those who heard it."
