حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ وَعَفَّانُ الْمَعْنَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَا ثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ الرِّشْكُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَرِيَّةً وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَأَحْدَثَ شَيْئًا فِي سَفَرِهِ فَتَعَاهَدَ قَالَ عَفَّانُ فَتَعَاقَدَ أَرْبَعَةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَذْكُرُوا أَمْرَهُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ عِمْرَانُ وَكُنَّا إِذَا قَدِمْنَا مِنْ سَفَرٍ بَدَأْنَا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ الثَّانِي فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ الثَّالِثُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ الرَّابِعُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الرَّابِعِ وَقَدْ تَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ فَقَالَ دَعُوا عَلِيًّا دَعُوا عَلِيًّا إِنَّ عَلِيًّا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّ كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ بَعْدِي.

Abdur-Razzaq and Affan told us - the meaning being the same, and this is the wording of Abdur-Razzaq - they said: Ja'far ibn Sulayman told us, Yazid ar-Rishk told me, from Mutarrif ibn Abdullah, from Imran ibn Husayn, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent out a detachment and put Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, in command of them. He did something during his expedition, so - Affan said: four of the companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, agreed together to mention his matter to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Imran said: "We used to, when we returned from a journey, go first to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and greet him." He said: They entered upon him, and one of them stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Ali did such-and-such," so he turned away from him. Then the second one stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Ali did such-and-such," so he turned away from him. Then the third stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Ali did such-and-such," so he turned away from him. Then the fourth stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Ali did such-and-such." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned to the fourth man, his face having changed, and said: "Leave Ali alone, leave Ali alone; Ali is from me and I am from him, and he is the guardian of every believer after me."
