Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu al-Muhallab, from Imran ibn Husayn, who said: Al-Adba (the Prophet's she-camel) belonged to a man from Banu Uqayl and was among the fastest camels of the pilgrims. The man was captured and al-Adba was taken with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by him while he was bound, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was on a donkey with a blanket on it. The man said: 'O Muhammad, you take me and you take the fastest camel of the pilgrims?' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'We take you for the crimes of your allies, Thaqif.' Thaqif had captured two men from the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Among what he said was: 'I am a Muslim.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Had you said that when you were in control of your own affair, you would have succeeded completely.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) continued on his way. The man called out: 'O Muhammad, I am hungry, so feed me; I am thirsty, so give me drink.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'This is your need.' Then he was ransomed in exchange for the two men, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) kept al-Adba for his own use. Then the polytheists raided the pastures of Madinah and took them, and al-Adba was among them. They also captured a Muslim woman. Whenever they camped, they would let their camels rest in their courtyards. The woman got up one night after they had fallen asleep. Every camel she approached bellowed, until she came to al-Adba — a docile, experienced camel. She mounted it and headed toward Madinah. She vowed that if Allah, Mighty and Majestic, saved her on it, she would slaughter it. When she arrived in Madinah, the camel was recognized and it was said: 'The she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)!' The Prophet (peace be upon him) was informed of her vow — or she came and told him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'What a terrible way to repay it! If Allah, Blessed and Exalted, saved her on it, she would slaughter it!' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no fulfillment of a vow made in disobedience to Allah, nor in what the son of Adam does not own.' Wuhayb — meaning Ibn Khalid — said: Thaqif were allies of Banu Uqayl. Hammad ibn Salamah added: Al-Adba was a domesticated camel that was not kept away from any watering trough or pasture. Affan said: 'Mujarrasah' means 'trained.'
