Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from Kinanah ibn Nuaym al-Adawi, from Abu Barzah al-Aslami, that Julaybib was a man who used to enter upon women, passing by them and jesting with them. I said to my wife: 'Do not let Julaybib enter upon you, for if he does, I will certainly do such-and-such.' The Ansar had a custom that if one of them had an unmarried woman, he would not marry her off until he knew whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) wanted her or not. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to a man from the Ansar: 'Give me your daughter in marriage.' The man said: 'Yes, gladly, O Messenger of Allah, it would be an honor.' He said: 'I do not want her for myself.' The man asked: 'Then for whom, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'For Julaybib.' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, let me consult her mother.' He went to her mother and said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is proposing for your daughter.' She said: 'Yes, gladly, it would be an honor.' He said: 'He is not proposing for himself; he is proposing for Julaybib.' She said: 'Julaybib?! Julaybib?! Julaybib?! No, by Allah, she shall not be married to him!' When the father was about to go to tell the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) what her mother had said, the girl asked: 'Who has proposed for me?' Her mother told her, and she said: 'Are you rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? Hand me over to him, for he will not ruin me.' So her father went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and informed him. He said: 'She is yours.' So he married her to Julaybib. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out on a military expedition, and when Allah granted him victory, he asked his companions: 'Do you miss anyone?' They said: 'We miss so-and-so, and we miss so-and-so.' He said: 'Look, do you miss anyone?' They said: 'No.' He said: 'But I miss Julaybib. Search for him among the slain.' They searched and found him beside seven whom he had killed before they killed him. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, here he is beside seven whom he killed, then they killed him.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) came and stood over him and said: 'He killed seven and they killed him. He is from me and I am from him' — two or three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) placed him on his forearms and a grave was dug for him — he had no bier except the forearms of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Then he placed him in his grave, and it was not mentioned that he washed him. Thabit said: There was no unmarried woman among the Ansar more sought after than her. Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah told Thabit: 'Do you know what supplication the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made for her?' He said: 'O Allah, pour goodness upon her abundantly, and do not make her life one of hardship.' So there was no unmarried woman among the Ansar more sought after than her. Abu Abd al-Rahman said: No one in the world narrated this except Hammad ibn Salamah — what an excellent hadith it is.
