Muhammad b. Ja'far told us: Shu'ba told us, from Abu Maslama, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: Abu Musa sought permission to enter upon Umar, may Allah Almighty be pleased with them both - he said: once, twice, three times - then Abu Musa went back. Umar said to him, "You must bring proof of this, or else I will do such-and-such" - he said: as if he was saying, "I will make you an example to others." So Abu Musa went to a gathering in which the Ansar were present and mentioned that to them. He said, "Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'When one of you asks permission three times and is not given it, let him go back'?" They said, "Yes indeed - none will stand up with you except the youngest of us." So Abu Sa'id al-Khudri stood up to Umar and said, "This is Abu Sa'id," so he let him go.
