Isma'il ibn Ibrahim told us, from Abu Hayyan al-Taymi: Yazid ibn Hayyan al-Taymi told me, who said: I set out, along with Husayn ibn Sabrah and Umar ibn Muslim, to Zayd ibn Arqam. When we sat with him, Husayn said to him: You have indeed encountered much good, O Zayd — you saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard his speech, fought alongside him, and prayed with him. You have indeed seen much good, O Zayd. Tell us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: O son of my brother, by Allah, my age has grown great, my time has grown distant, and I have forgotten some of what I used to retain from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. So whatever I narrate to you, accept it, and whatever I do not, do not burden me with it. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once stood delivering a sermon to us at a water called Khumm, between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, Exalted is He, extolled Him, exhorted and reminded, then said: To proceed — O people, I am only a human being; the messenger of my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, is about to come to me and I shall respond. I am leaving behind among you two weighty matters: the first of them is the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in which is guidance and light. So take hold of the Book of Allah, Exalted is He, and hold fast to it — and he urged and encouraged adherence to the Book of Allah. He said: And my household — I remind you of Allah regarding my household; I remind you of Allah regarding my household; I remind you of Allah regarding my household. Husayn said to him: And who is his household, O Zayd? Are not his wives from his household? He said: His wives are indeed from his household, but his household are those who are forbidden charity after him. He said: And who are they? He said: They are the family of Ali, the family of Aqil, the family of Ja'far, and the family of Abbas. He said: Are all these forbidden charity? He said: Yes.
