Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Awn ibn Abi Juhayfa, from al-Mundhir ibn Jarir, from his father, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the early part of the day, when a group of people came to him, barefoot, poorly clad, wrapped in striped cloaks or woolen wraps, wearing swords - most of them, indeed all of them, from Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, changed when he saw the destitution they were in. He went in, then came out, and ordered Bilal, who gave the call to prayer and the iqama; he prayed, then delivered a sermon, saying: "O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul" - to the end of the verse - "Indeed Allah is ever a watcher over you." And he recited the verse in Surat al-Hashr: "And let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow." "Let a man give in charity from his dinar, from his dirham, from his garment, from his sa' of wheat, from his sa' of dates" - until he said, "even if only half a date." Then a man from the Ansar came with a purse that his hand could barely - indeed could not - hold, then the people followed one after another until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, until I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, beaming - meaning as if it were gilded. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam has its reward and the reward of whoever acts upon it after him, without anything being diminished from their rewards; and whoever introduces an evil practice in Islam bears its burden and the burden of whoever acts upon it after him, without anything being diminished from their burdens." Hashim ibn al-Qasim told us: Shu'bah told us, who said: I heard Awn ibn Abi Jahfa say: I heard al-Mundhir ibn Jarir narrating from his father, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the early part of the day - and he mentioned it - except that he said: "and he ordered Bilal, who gave the call to prayer, then he went in, then came out and prayed," and he said, "as if it were gilded."
