Affan told us: Hammad ibn Salama told us: Sa'id ibn Jumhan told me, who said: We were fighting the Khawarij, and among us was Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa. A slave of his had joined the Khawarij, they being on that riverbank and we on this riverbank. We called out to him, "O Abu Fayruz, Abu Fayruz, woe to you, this is your master Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa!" He said, "What a fine man he would be, if only he had emigrated." Someone said, "What does the enemy of Allah say?" We said, "He says, 'What a fine man he would be, if only he had emigrated.'" So he said, "Is there emigration after my emigration with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, 'Glad tidings to whoever kills them and whom they kill.'"
