Abdur-Rahman, that is Ibn Mahdi, narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from a shaykh of Bajilah, he said: I heard Ibn Abi Awfa say: Abu Bakr, may Allah Almighty be pleased with him, sought permission to enter upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while a slave-girl was with him striking a tambourine. Then 'Umar, may Allah Almighty be pleased with him, sought permission and entered. Then 'Uthman, may Allah Almighty be pleased with him, sought permission, so she stopped. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed 'Uthman is a shy man."
