Abu Nu'aym told us: Mis'ar told us, from Abd al-Jabbar ibn Wa'il, who said: My family told me, from my father, who said: A bucket of water was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He drank from it, then rinsed his mouth and spat it back into the bucket, then poured it into the well - or he drank from the bucket, then rinsed his mouth and spat into the well - and there wafted from it a fragrance like the scent of musk.
