Yahya told us, from Shu'bah: Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman told me, from Ubayd ibn Firuz, who said: I asked al-Bara' ibn Azib, "Tell me what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade or disliked concerning sacrificial animals." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood among us, and my hand was shorter than his, and said, "Four do not suffice: the one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, the sick animal whose sickness is obvious, the lame animal whose limp is obvious, and the emaciated animal that has no marrow." I said, "I dislike there being a deficiency in the teeth, in the ear, or in the horn." He said, "What you dislike, then leave it, but do not forbid it to anyone." Affan told us: Shu'bah told us: Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman informed me, he said: I heard Ubayd ibn Firuz, a client of Banu Shayban, who asked al-Bara' about the sacrificial animals, and he mentioned the hadith.
