Affan told us: Shu'bah told us: Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman informed me, he said: I heard Ubayd ibn Firuz, the client of Banu Shayban, [say] that he asked al-Bara' about the sacrificial animals—what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade and disliked. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—or: the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood among us, and my hand was shorter than his—and said, "Four do not suffice: the one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, the sick animal whose sickness is obvious, the lame animal whose limp is obvious, and the emaciated animal that has no marrow." He said: I said, "I dislike there being any deficiency in the horn"—or he said, "in the ear"—"or in the teeth." He said, "What you dislike, then leave it, but do not forbid it to anyone."
